Or, what about running? All these overwrought sports ads - like you're some sort of storybook heroine, victor, champion just for running around the block or hacking out of the sand trap. Do recreational athletes really identify this strongly with their hobbies? Maybe so...

In short, yes. Even recreational golfers have their 'majors'--be it their club championship or the big money game on Thursdays. Runners, soccer fans, basketballers, baseball fanatics.....they've all got the desire to be their own personal best-athlete and many of them may even have been a great athlete but taken a different path in life, but still hold on to a piece fo that dream. That's why this type of advertising works.
Although it often misses the mark, but then most advertising does.
